God places a premium on wisdom as stated in Proverbs 4:5–7: “Get wisdom, get understanding…she will protect you; love her, and she will watch over you. Wisdom is supreme; therefore get wisdom.” God’s will for you is to get wisdom.
His wisdom is supreme, which in the language of the Old Testament means it is the principal thing—it is first, chief, and primary—it is the beginning.
Proverbs 16:16 adds more when it proclaims, “How much better to get wisdom than gold,” and Proverbs 3:13 says, “Blessed is the man who finds wisdom.”
“If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him. But when he asks, he must believe and not doubt.”
Consider this passage in its various parts:
If any of you lacks wisdom. The “you” refers to Christians. This passage is God’s promise to all Christians who recognize their need for more wisdom.
He should ask God. God will provide the wisdom you need to get you to the best answers to life’s most important questions. Think of him first.
Who gives generously. God is not stingy with his wisdom. He gives liberally. There will be no lack in the wisdom he gives you.
God communicates his wisdom through the commandments, principles, and illustrations found in his Word; through the preaching and teaching at your local church; and through the counsel of other believers. The Holy Spirit can illuminate your thinking during times of prayer, reflection, or worship. Look for God’s hand at work in a change in your circumstance. God can get his wisdom to you in many ways.
To all. All Christians are included in God’s promise of more wisdom, not just a select few.
Without finding fault. God will give his wisdom to you without reproach. No condemnation. He is delighted that you turned to him in your time of need.
And it will be given to him. Expect to hear from God. Listen for his message.
But when he asks, he must believe and not doubt. Wisdom is God’s promise, and your faith activates his promise. Faith is believing what God says is true while the world gives you reasons to doubt.
God will guide you by making you wise in his ways.
