The following seven keys are Bible-based guides for the workplace Christian. They apply to all occupations in every culture. To be blessed by God is to be the recipient of his benevolence, grace, and favor. Work changes, but God never does.
Key 1: Serve God with Your Work
Honorable work is a high calling from God. He designed you to engage with his creation–to be fruitful, active, and creative. At its core your work is a service to God to be performed to his glory. (Eph 6:7, Col 3:24-25)
God is always for you and never against you. He can bring good out of every trial you will ever experience—somehow, somewhere, sometime. Begin to see your trials as opportunities for personal growth. (Rom 5:3-5 and 8:28, Jas 1:12)
Key 3: Choose Wise Companions
Your friends and organizational affiliations, for better or for worse, will influence your degree of success in life. Wise people excel at the craft of living, but fools delight in not understanding. (Prov 13:20, 1 Cor 15:33)
Key 4: Be Humble in Your Success
Humility is simply recognizing your dependence on God and it is never about denying your talents or successes. Humble people are more God-and-others-centered than self-centered. God opposes the proud. (Prov 22:4, Jas 4:6)
Key 5: Be Generous with Your Resources
Generous people are free of smallness. They are magnanimous and not petty; they give liberally and they are special. Who wants to work with someone who only takes? (Prov 11:25 and 28:22, 1 Tim 6:18)
Key 6: Make Time to Rest
God put boundaries on your work and he did it for your own good. Work has limits. Both work and rest are creation mandates and both are necessary for living a successful life. (Gen 2:2-3, Ex 20:9-10, Mk 6:31)
Key 7: Be Salt & Light to Others
The workplace is your mission field. It is within commuting distance from your home, and you are there five days a week. You are a minister of the Gospel of Jesus Christ at your place of employment. (Matt 5:13-14, Lk 4:18-19)
Bringing God to work is the best career decision you will ever make.
