Boaz’s life demonstrates how God can use a working believer to be His agent of blessing to another person. Boaz’s story is recorded in the Book of Ruth where God uses Boaz, a wealthy landowner, to be a blessing to Ruth, a widowed laborer.
This spiritual principle of being God’s agent of blessing to another person is still active today.
Consider Boaz’s example in the following verses from Ruth 2.
Verse 2 introduces Boaz with these words:
“Now Naomi had a relative on her husband’s side, from the clan of Elimelech, a man of standing, whose name was Boaz.”
Boaz was a “man of standing” which in the Hebrew means a man of influence, substance, riches, valor, etc. The KJV describes Boaz as “a mighty man of wealth.” In today’s culture, we could describe him as a mature believer with a successful career.
Boaz was a blessed man who used what God had given him to bless others.
In an act of divine providence, God brought Ruth to Boaz’s field when she was looking for work. Ruth was a righteous woman but at this point in her life she was poor, widowed, and a new immigrant to Israel.
Verses 8-9 tell us:
“So Boaz said to Ruth, ‘My daughter, listen to me. Don’t go and glean in another field and don’t go away from here … I have told the men not to touch you. And whenever you are thirsty, go and get a drink from the water jars the men have filled.’”
Boaz welcomed Ruth and encouraged her to “glean” the grain left behind by his harvesters. Gleaning was God’s way of providing for “the poor and the alien” (Leviticus 19:10) through their own honest labor.
Boaz not only encouraged Ruth to “glean” his field, but he was a model of virtue and generosity throughout the whole work arrangement.
Later in verse 12, Boaz says to Ruth:
“May the Lord repay you for what you have done. May you be richly rewarded by the Lord, the God of Israel, under whose wings you have come to take refuge.”
Boaz understood that he was blessed by God so he could be a blessing to Ruth. He was the human agent through which Ruth would be “richly rewarded by the Lord.”
Boaz was a successful man who was generous with his wealth. He was obedient to God and honorable in his relationships with others. Boaz is an exemplary role model for today’s working Christian.
Bless others through your career success.
